Merry Christmas from ZBS

Saturday, December 25th, 2010

We just wanted to take a moment and thank everyone for all of their support this holiday season. All of the classes this week were filled with tons of dancing vixens and amazing energy. A huge thanks to everyone who donated coats and warm weather gear to the Roanoke Area Ministries. There were so many coats that Patsy Wallace, owner of Gold’s, could barely fit them all into her Jeep! Take a look…

Not only was the entire back full, but the back seat and front seat too!

She said that the RAM house was so grateful for the donations and that there were well over 100 people there who were so thankful to have the coats during this cold holiday. You continue to awe me with your love and generosity. We are so lucky to have the opportunity to have such an amazing community of Zumba fanatics!

Merry Christmas!

Love,

Sara and Erin

PS- Be sure to check back next week for our New Year’s Challenge!

ZBS's Favorite Things: Frees

Tuesday, November 23rd, 2010

Hello my Dancing Vixens! As usual, I have let my blog get away from me, so I have some catching up to do! I have been so slammed with all the crazy fun events, new classes and workshops we have been doing that I have been neglegent in posting playlists and such for you.

I can’t believe that the holidays are creeping up on us! A sure sign of this is that Oprah’s Favorite Things final show was on last week. While watch I realized Oprah and I have a lot in common…well, we love a lot of the same things. One of the things Oprah and I both love are the Nike Free Runs! I have worn a lot of different shoes and these are by far my FAVORITE! My man designed me a super cute pair for my bday, but because I dance so much it was imperative that I have a back up pair just in case.

These are the Nike ID, custom designed shoes. You can pick the colors and even what you want them to say. Mine say “Doubt Kills”, a quote from one of my Favorite Zumba Education Specialists, Tanya Beardsley.

Unlike Oprah, Nike has not given me shoes to give away to my participants, but maybe if you add them to your Christmas list and stay on your best behavior, Santa may surprise you!

PS- They take about 4 weeks to get them custom done so you may need to tell your personal Santa to get to crackin’ if you want to see Free’s under your tree!

Just Dance

Wednesday, November 10th, 2010

Hi my Zumba Friends! I know I’m a bit behind on my blogging, but I have been a little slammed lately! Don’t worry though, we’ve got a few things in store for you!

Remember when I asked you to name my new class? Well after much thought, I decided to go with JUST DANCE!

Pic from Lady Gaga’s September Concert in Charlotte

There is something about Lady Gaga’s song that just makes you feel super care free and fun and that’s just what I want people to feel in this class. So here are the basics:

What is Just Dance? Just Dance is a dance inspired fitness class that allows you to let loose and dance to familiar songs from many different musical genres, including Hip Hop, Latin, Pop, Swing, Oldies, Reggae and more while getting a total body work out. Similar to Zumba, the moves are simple and repetitive so everyone can do it, you don’t have to worry about getting everything right…Just Dance.

Where and When? Gold’s Gym 419 on Monday Nights at 730p.

Did I hear a rumor that you’re going to have “theme nights”? We are going to start off by doing different themes for class, feel free to pull from your inner Gaga and break out a costume or 2! The themes will be posted the Friday before class on my Facebook Page, so if you want to dress up you will have plenty of time to get your costume together.

Why “Just Dance” and NOT Zumba? I LOVE Zumba and have NO PLANS to stop teaching Zumba. I have had a lot of participants ask for more and more top 40 songs. In order to give you what you’re asking for and teach in a more open format, while still keeping true to Zumba and what it was created to be. (Which btw is not a top 40/ reggaeton mixed class.) :)

I hope to see all of you in class soon…besides, what’s a better way to get over a case of the Mondays? JUST DANCE!

“I don’t want you to love me more…

I want you to LOVE YOU MORE!”~Lady Gaga

Inspiration: ZIN 29

Tuesday, October 26th, 2010

A lot of people ask me where I get my choreography for Zumba class, and there is no one answer. I get a lot of inspiration for choreography from other instructors either by visiting their class or on the internet, from pop culture music videos, people dancing in the club and from ZIN DVD’s that I get from being a member of the Zumba Instructor Network. I take what I love from other people and make it my own.

I LOVE when a ZIN arrives in the mail, especially when it’s done by one of my favorite ZES, like Tanya B, Gina or George. It’s always neat to see how music inspires people to move in different ways. I was impressed with the newest ZIN and loved seeing a new Zumba Education Specialist host. Stephanie was AWESOME! She was easy to follow and have fun simple choreography.

Look for my personal interpretation of some of the newest ZIN 29 songs in class soon! Some of my favorites include:

Tu Amor Me Hace Bien by Marc Anthony Beto’s Choreo with a touch of Sara

Mueve la Cadera by Zumba Fitness (Move Your Hips) * Undecided, but it will premier soon!

Zumba vs. NOT Zumba

Wednesday, October 20th, 2010

Since being in Roanoke, I have been teaching strictly Zumba Fitness, which has been a bit of a change to me. See, when I lived in Charlotte and worked for Queen City Dancing Queen, I taught a lot of different kinds of dance inspired fitness. One of my favorite classes to teach was DanceOut! which was a mix of all different kinds of music and was less restrictive in format than Zumba.

Many people don’t realize that because Zumba is based on Latin and International music, you need to keep your classes to be AT LEAST 70% International rhythms.

Last week I promised my Monday Gold’s class, TOTAL REQUEST ZUMBA. I don’t do this often for a few reasons.

1. I spend a good amount of time preparing my classes to make sure that my participants are getting a variety of rhythms and a total body work out.

2. My classes always pick American or Reggaeton songs. This can make for a fun dance fitness class, but NOT a Zumba class.

On Monday I decided to do the class as promised, but REFUSED to call it Zumba.

Playlist from Monday 10/18: NOT ZUMBA

The Power (hit the floor)- Big Ali ft Dollarman

In order to give you what you’re asking for on TRZ,  I’ve decided to change my Monday night Gold’s class to a more open structure, but I have one issue…I NEED A NAME FOR THE CLASS! Name my class and I will give you $20 towards Zumbawear of your choice! :)

Here are the rules:

1. Name needs to be short and fun.

2. It can not be any play off Zumba, like Hip Hop Zumba.

3. All entries must be given to me either by commenting on this post via the website or facebook.

4. All entries must be in by Saturday, October 30th. Name will be announced in class on Monday, November first!

Can’t wait to see what you all come up with!

Sara
